During this visit, you should work with one or more groups of students if you haven't already, and observe your teacher doing the same. For this journal entry, describe your teacher's teaching style. What type of relationships with students does he or she nurture in his or her classes? How do students perceive that power is distributed in the classes? Does this vary within or across the different classes the teacher has? Cite examples from your observations to support your inferences. Remember to reflect on what style of teaching you will gravitate toward and the how you want to be perceived by your students.
Observe - In Mrs. H's Middle School class she has an extremely productive teaching style. She is capable of joking around with the students, but she always is in control. If she feels that the class is crossing the line or joking around too much, then she immedeately will discipline the class and restore order. The class definitely understands that Mrs. h is in charge of the classroom. Ofcourse each of her 5 classes is different, and she has to adapt to the personalities of each class. One of her classes she does not joke around as much simply because keeping the students on task is a job in itself. I watched her period 3 class make up a lab on my last visit, and I was allowed to walk around the room and ask the students questions. While I was asking questions I watched the way my CT interacted with the groups. One thing I picked up on was when the students were struggling with questions on the lab sheet, they would try to get Mrs. H to give them the answer to the question. She talked to me about this after class, how when the students are stuck they often want you to give them the answer, but it is our job as teachers to deflect this situation by prying at the students prior knowledge to get them to answer the question by themselves. Reflect - When I become a teacher and have my own classroom, I hope that the students will enjoy coming to my class. I want them to think that my class is interesting and not just a boring science class. I plan on being friendly with the students and keeping the mood light in the classroom, but learning willl always be the number one priority in the class. I want my students to feel comfortable with me, this way they will not be afraid to ask questions when they are confused, or to speak their opinion in my classroom. Maintaining order in the classroom is extremely important for its success, so although I will be friendly with the students I plan on making sure they know that I am in charge of the classroom. I assume that I will give the students some leeway, and don't want or expect my class to be like a boot camp. I feel that if the students are constantly being disciplined, then the discipline will lose its affect. There is only so many times that you can give a student detention and it to continue having a positive effect. I plan on letting my class know that not payign attention and not doing the schoolwork is only going to hurt them as well as their grade. I want my students to be self motivated, but with middle schoolers, this is definitely a tough task, so I will be constantly reminding the students of the goals of my classroom, and how badly I want my students to suceed.
